PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

COCONUT OIL, Extra Virgin, Certified Organic:
The addition of coconut oil, which is primarily a saturated fat, helps protect your heart cells from damage, boost your thyroid function, increase your metabolism, and support your immune system. Many studies have demonstrated a close association between consumption of unsaturated oils (vegetable oils like corn and canola) and increased incidence of cancer.  Avoid cooking with unsaturated oils, such as corn and canola, which produce a variety of toxic chemicals when heated and are almost universally genetically modified (GM) G. W. Crile and his wife found the metabolic rate of people in Yucatan, where coconut is a staple food, averaged 25 percent higher than that of Americans. Unsaturated fats suppress your metabolic rate, which can lead to hypopituitarism; coconut oil can actually enhance your thyroid function and help you achieve your optimal weight.

a2Milk

Recently Paul's milk has been advertising on television that their milk does not contain any 'permeate'.
This has prompted me to find out exactly what permeate is??

It's apparently a watery, greenish waste product from the production of cheese - and documents obtained by the Herald reveal that it forms up to 16 per cent of the fresh milk we drink.

Internal documents from Australia's biggest supplier, National Foods - which makes Pura, Big M, Dairy Farmers and supplies both Woolworths and Coles brand milk - reveal its milk now contains up to 16.43 per cent permeate.
I had already planned to talk about the benefits of drinking a2Milk as it is naturally rich in the A2 type of beta-casein protein.
Beta-casein is a type of protein that makes up one third of the protein in milk. It is a high quality milk protein that is a source of essential amino acids, as well as peptides.
The chief executive of A2 Milk, Peter Nathan, who said none of his milk contained permeate, described the substance as a "lemony-green liquid substance; it's certainly not attractive''. He said consumers were "being led to believe that milk they are drinking is pure milk. It's not".
However, the labels on milk diluted with cheap permeate don’t mention it.
We have a right to know what’s in our food so that we can make informed decisions. If we’re prepared to pay more for whole milk that really is whole milk that should be our choice and if we want to buy the cheaper alternatives we have a right know how much is milk and how much is permeate.

Stevia - the safe alternative to artifical sweeteners

What is the difference between stevia and traditional sweeteners?
Stevia is a great tasting alternative to traditional artificial sweeteners. Sourced directly from plant leaves it is all natural and does not include any added chemicals.
The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) conducted a comprehensive risk assessment prior to approving the addition of Stevia to the Australian food supply in 2008, and concluded that steviol glycosides are unlikely to have adverse effects on health (blood pressure, blood glucose or other parameters in normal, hypotensive or diabetic subjects) at doses up to 11 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day. They specifically examined any potential adverse risk to children and diabetics and concluded “there are no public health and safety concerns for steviol glycosides when used as a food additive at the maximum levels proposed”.

Hydrolysed vegetable protein

Do you know how Hydrolysed vegetable protein is manufactured? It's one of the more common substitutes for pure MSG and is found in a huge range of common foods. Dr. Blaycock provides this explanation of what this healthy sounding ingredient really is.
'HVP is made from junk vegetables selected for their high quantity of excitotoxins; e.g.glutamate.The vegetables are boiled in a vat of sulphuric acid for several hours then the acid is neutralised with caustic soda. The brown sludge is scraped off the top and dried into a powder. The powder contains known carcinogens and dicarboxylic, the safety of which is unknown. MSG is often added to this powder. Finally, the powder is put in our food, including baby food, and we eat it.'
