Continental Cup a Soup- Sensations

NOT SO SENSATIONAL!

The label states 'no added MSG' and  'no Artificial Colours or flavours' yet with a list of 19 or so ingredients I couldn't help but be suspicious.
On the positive side though at least there are no coal tar dyes.  Good to see Turmeric & paprika listed.

However, with only 29% pumpkin & 62% tomato you have to wonder what is in the rest of the product?

There are 2 hidden forms of MSG in both the Pumpkin & Tomato soups.
Pumpkin- maltodextrin & yeast extract (14th, & 15th respectively) and
Tomato- yeast extract & natural flavours ( 17th & 19th).

Both flavours have mineral salt 450; the pumpkin flavour has the additional mineral salts 451 & 452.
It puzzles me how they can be regarded as 'safe' when there are links to these mineral salts and kidney stones in susceptible people.

Quite unusual, but pleasing to see the herb lovage ( a tall celery like plant) as the 17th ingredient in the Pumpkin flavour.
Lovage can be used in digestive difficulties, such as colic, indigestion and flatulence.
However, this good feeling was very quickly negated when I read the 19th ingredient in the pumpkin was  'natural butter flavour'- i.e. Diacetyl- the substance linked to lung disease in Microwave Popcorn.

Too high a price for convenience.
 FRESH IS BEST.

'In 2012, Wayne Watson a regular microwavable popcorn consumer for years, was awarded $7.27 million in damages from a federal jury in Denver, which decided his lung disease was caused by the chemicals in microwave popcorn and that the popcorn's manufacturer, Gilster- Mary Lee Corporation,  and the grocery store that sold it should have warned him of its dangers.'

THE DANGERS OF PLASTICS

WARNING!

Check the number printed on the bottom of your plastic bottles and food containers. This is the Resin Identification Code which describes what kind of plastic resin the product is made out of.

The most toxic plastics are 7, 3 & 6;
                                         1,2,4,& 5 are slightly safer.

Research indicates that 95% of all plastic products tested positive for estrogenic activity. This means that they contain chemicals that can potentially disrupt your hormones and cause other adverse health issues.

I have always advocated the purchase of oils and condiments in glass citing the leakage of the dioxins in the plastic into the product.

1- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is the commonly used plastic for bottled water, soft drinks, juice, sports drinks, mouthwash, salad dressings etc. Never reheat food in a plastic container in the microwave- place food in a crockery bowl or dinner plate OR better still, reheat in a saucepan or an oven!  Exposure to high temperatures increases the leakage of antimony ( a toxic metal used during the manufacture of PET plastic) from the plastic container.

Some tips:
1. take your own mug to work for tea or coffee ( don't use disposable cups);
2. purchase all oils, fish sauce, chilli sauce etc in glass bottles;
3. take your own filtered water from home in a BPA free or glass bottle instead of buying bottled water;
4. purchase as little as possible from the middle of the supermarket;
5. purchase lots of fresh, whole 'real' foods from a farmer's market.

HEINZ LITTLE KIDS MINI CORN CAKES- TOMATO

WARNING!
I found this product on the shelf just above the baby formula's. It's clearly labelled that it is supposedly suitable for 'Little Kids'. I would argue that it's clearly a DANGER to our children's health & well being.

To a large majority of consumers this product may appear safe. After all, according to the label there are:
No added colours
 No added salt
 No artificial flavours
 No preservatives

This is what I call Advertising by Omission.  And, what has been omitted?

The very nasty FLAVOUR ENHANCERS- i.e. 3 forms of MSG! Namely- MALTODEXTRIN (4th), YEAST EXTRACT (6TH) & NATURAL FLAVOUR.
I also suspect that the Tomato Seasoning, Onion Powder & Garlic Powder would also contain some form of flavour enhancers.

These Corn Cakes as the food manufacturers state are' just the right size for little hands and mouths' but the statement
' this wholesome snack has a light texture that's easy to chew and swallow,' makes me cringe.

SPREAD THE WORD- THIS  IS NOT A 'WHOLESOME SNACK' BUT AN 'INDUSTRALIZED NOVELTY' NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO SHARED THE INFORMATION ON THE NAN & KARICARE BABY FORMULA'S. REACH WAS OVER 2,000 CONSUMERS!

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

SAFE!
ORGANIC BANANA APPLE PORRIDGE (4 mths +)

Although it is desirable to source organic produce and make your own baby foods from scratch I believe that many new mum's are very busy women, especially if they have other children to attend to as well as a newborn. Bellamy's brand seems to offer a safe alternative for some meals.

BELLAMY'S brand of baby food is
  • Certified by NASAA Certified Organic
  • Made in Australia
  • BPA free packaging
  • Choke safe cap

  • I haven't had an opportunity to analyse all their products yet but today I would like to recommend the Organic Banana Apple Porridge. (Apple & Fig pictured below- is also safe)

The ingredients listed add up to 100%- Organic apple (68%), organic banana (17%), organic brown rice (10%), organic oats (4%), organic cinnamon (1%). Allergens: Contains gluten (organic oats).

Let me know if there are any other products in the Bellamy's range you would like me to analyse.

    Grocery Food Wars

THIS IS A VERY ENTERTAINING VIDEO CLIP ON THE STATE OF THE SUPERMARKET FRUIT & VEGETABLES.

This video clip will certainly lighten up your day - enjoy the parody; enjoy the humour.

     & SHARE!

    BABY FORMULA

    WARNING!

SOURCES OF PROCESSED FREE GLUTAMIC ACID IN TWO BABY FORMULA'S-
    1) NAN 2- MALTODEXTRIN (2nd listed ingredient on label)
    2) KARICARE PLUS- MALTODEXTRIN (3rd listed ingredient on label).
We all know that avoiding MSG in foods is extremely difficult especially when there are around 52 additives that are sources of processed free Glutamic Acid but, strictly speaking, are not labelled as MSG.

MSG is prohibited from baby foods and infant formula's. However, I have found it 'under-cover' in the 2 popular baby formula's listed above.

In addition to this, there is another ingredient which caused hundreds of complaints from customers in August, 2012:

Nestle external relations manager Margaret Stuart said the company ran tests when it switched calcium chloride (509- stomach irritant in sensitive people- i.e. babies?)  for potassium chloride  (508) in the formula recipe.
However, you don't have to look far to read that  research associates Potassium Chloride (508) with gastric ulcers, nausea and liver toxicity. Research distinctly states that Potassium Chloride SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN.
WHY IS IT  IN NAN 2 BABY FORMULA?

This is not just disappointing but disgusting. Our children's well being is being eroded.
Avoid purchasing these products- pass this on to whoever you know who is currently using baby formula.

    Supermarket Secrets- Part 7

    WATCH OUT- BE AWARE!

Take 9 mins or so out of your busy life and listen to the truth behind those 'cosemetically perfect' fruit and vegetables that greet us when we enter the supermarket.
When it comes to potatoes 'size does matter' and 'blemishes' are a real no no!
Listen to how some farmers achieve these 'picture perfect' fruit & veg.

Buy from local farmers' markets as much as you can, or even better, grow some of your own!

    Devondale Fast Start

    CONSUME IN MODERATION.

Devondale have produced a similar product to Santarium's Up & Go.
Fast Start is available in 3 flavours- Vanilla, Coffee & Chocolate.

Devondale's Fast Start (Coffee)  has  2 forms of MSG ('natural flavours'- 3rd last on the ingredient list, & 407 'Carrageenan- 2nd last on the ingredient list) and not 8, as has the Santarium product. This is a vast improvement, although not entirely satisfactory.

It must be noted that Carrageenan (407)  is a suspected carcinogen and is linked to immune system damage. Worrying yes, but not quite as worrying as GMO's or asparteme.

It is also disappointing  to see 'inulin' listed as the 4th ingredient and the colour 150d  in the coffee flavour(linked to gastro intestinal problems).
The  Fast Start coffee flavour at least  has 4% coffee powder & not an artificial colour instead.

So if you like such a drink, consume in moderation OR replace with a fresh orange juice or even organic milk.

    Campbell's Real Stock

    REAL OR NOT REAL?
    MIXED RESULTS!

If you are watching MKR on Channel 7 currently you can't help but see the Campbell's advertisement for their 'Real Stock'.
Personally, I would love to believe Manu- 'there is nothing artificial'; it's 'real stock'.

Well, the FISH stock is, except for a small amount of Lactic Acid (270) which acts as an antioxidant.
Lactic acid can be converted back to glycogen in the liver but is recognised to be difficult for babies to metabolise.  It is usually obtained commercially by heating and fermenting carbohydrates such as sucrose, molasses, starch, or whey.

Vegetarians should be aware that as lactic acid is a naturally occurring animal product, it could conceivably be of animal origin.

The VEGETABLE stock is the next best- 97% vegetable content, followed by sugar & sea salt.

It is best to avoid the CHICKEN stock because besides added salt & sugar, MSG has found it's way into this stock in the form of 'Yeast Extract'.

The BEEF stock is also best avoided as it has 2 forms of MSG- namely 'Yeast Extract' & 'Natural Flavour'.

    POWERADE- LEMON LIME

WARNING! (Particularly for all Sportsmen, Sportswomen & young athletes)

This is not a healthy drink to consume on a regular basis.

However: For endurance athletes, marathon runners and people who exercise outdoors,  who are in critical need of salt replacement, Powerade and similar products are useful.
The electrolytes (sodium and potassium) in the drink help to replace those lost in sweat. Sodium is the major salt lost in sweat, as well as being the most critical electrolyte for performance and health.
Electrolytes play a key role in electrical conductivity around your body, which is important for muscle contraction and the nerve signalling from the brain.

For those of us who are not endurance athletes and who do not exercise outdoors, drinks like Powerade are not necessary. They not only add excess calories to your diet in the form of sucrose (sugar is the 2nd listed ingredient) but also contain maltodextrin (form of MSG- 3rd ingredient on the label) & flavour (MSG-5th).  The last ingredient in the Lemon Lime flavour is 102- Tartrazine- a coal tar dye & suspected carcinogen; linked to migraines & thyroid damage. Unfortunately, all other flavours contain these coal tar dyes, (hence the bright colours!),  plus 2 forms of MSG. At least there is no high-fructose corn syrup in Australia & New Zealand.

For those who exercise at a moderate intensity for an hour or less,  filtered water is probably the better choice. Certain other beverages, such as orange juice, can be used as sports supplements. It can reduce muscle fatigue and may leadsto faster recovery and better results.

One medical study was done on orange juice and people engaged in exercise. The subjects were overweight women. The women exercised for three months. The group of women who drank orange juice every day had better blood test results.
Both groups improved the anaerobic threshold by 20%, but blood lactate concentration decreased 27% in the experimental group compared to the 17% control group, suggesting that experimental [orange juice] group has less muscle fatigue and better response to training.

    PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK: COOKED ORGANIC TOMATOES
    ENJOY!

One of the most well-known nutrients in tomatoes is lycopene — the compound that gives tomato its deep red colour.

Research has shown Lycopene to have anti-cancerous activity as well as maybe reducing your risk of stroke.

  • Choose organic varieties, whether whole tomatoes or tomato paste, tomato sauce, or pasta sauce. Organic tomato sauce has been found to contain 57 percent more lycopene than conventional brands.

  • The cooking of the tomatoes not only increases the lycopene content that can be absorbed by your body, but it also increases the total antioxidant activity.

  • Consume your tomatoes, whether raw or cooked, with some type of fat, such as olive oil, since lycopene is a fat-soluble nutrient.
  •
  • Avoid anything that comes in a can, since the acidity of the tomatoes will increase toxic BPA release from the liner.

  • I am yet to find a can of organic tomatoes that doesn't have BPA lining! If you know of a brand I would be only too pleased to hear about it!

    Quick & Easy Chicken Recipe

    ENJOY!
The following recipe 'Cheeky Chicken' is one of my favourites. It can be prepared ahead, includes fresh ginger, garlic & tumeric, only takes 12-15 mins to cook, & left-overs are ideal to use in wraps for lunch the next day.

    Cheeky Chicken

450g chicken ( tenderloins, thigh, or breast- cut into strips or dice)
1 tsp grated fresh ginger (use more if desired)
    1-2 garlic cloves, crushed
    1 tsp chilli powder
    1/2 tsp tumeric powder
    1 tsp pink salt
    2/3 C natural yogurt
    4 Tb fresh lemon juice
    1 Tb  chopped fresh coriander
    lettuce cups

    Method:
    1. Place yogurt, ginger, garlic, chilli, tumeric, salt, lemon juice & coriander in a medium bowl. Mix well.
    2. Slice or dice chicken into strips or small cubes.
    3. Combine chicken with yogurt mixture, place in refrigerator & marinate for 1-2 hrs.
    4. Pre-heat grill. Line baking tray with foil then baking paper. Grill chicken for about 12-15 mins, turning & basting 2-3 times.
    5. Serve in lettuce cups. May be accompanied with rice & or corn on the cob; or salad. Garnish with lime wedges & fresh coriander.
